The artificial intelligence-driven biosensing will make it possible to acquire and interpret novel biological information that has been difficult for humans to understand, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of highly accurate medical and agricultural applications. To collect and analyze higher quality biological data, non-invasive or non-destructive acquisition of chemical information inside of the living body will be considered more important than ever before. The authors have utilized the phenomenon that chemical compounds in living bodies are easily extracted into water which contacts with the living body surface, and have developed a non-invasive, non-destructive chemical sensing device for both humans and plants, named as a hydrogel touchpad-based chemical sensor. In this article, we describe the recent progress in developing our sensor, and its future prospect.

Catalytic Combustion-type Methan Sensor Using Rare Earth Silicate

Methane (CH4) is an important energy source, but it is also a potent greenhouse gas, making the monitoring of its atmospheric leakage crucial. This topic describes a catalytic combustion-type sensor capable of detecting methane at low temperatures, focusing on oxide-ion-conducting apatite-type rare-earth silicates as the sensor catalyst. Among various rare-earth silicates, gadolinium silicate exhibited the superior sensor performance due to its excellent redox ability, despite its relatively low oxide-ion conductivity. This high redox ability altered the valence state of the primary palladium (Pd) catalyst; specifically, a decreased proportion of Pd2+ in the Gd-based system promoted methane oxidation. These findings are expected to provide key guidelines for catalyst design in catalytic combustion-type sensors.
