Electronic-nose (e-nose) has been widely applied to various fields including food, cosmetics, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. With the recent development of internet of things technology, the requirements to e-nose become highly diverse: high discrimination performance, miniature size and low power operation so that they can be installed in wireless sensor network (WSN). For these requirements, e-nose can utilize transient sensor output to enhance its discrimination performance. In this study, we propose a metal-oxide memristor as a device that enables low-calculation-cost feature extraction from the transient sensor output, which is desirable for e-nose installed in WSN. First, the concept of feature extraction from transient sensor output by a memristor is introduced. Then, a feature extraction test by a memristor was carried out. Using acetone and ethanol as test gases, the transient sensor outputs were input into the memristor under the condition that the sensor outputs for these gases in their steady states were similar to each other. Then, the resultant resistances of the memristor were different between the test gases, whereby the promising property of memristor as a feature extraction device from transient sensor output was demonstrated. These results lead to the development of a novel hardware which enables feature extraction with low calculation cost in e-nose system.
