The author’s research on metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors for the past 20 years is mainly grouped into three items. As SnO2 gas sensors are energized for a long period of time, the sensor resistance decreases and the sensitivity to gases such as hydrogen and alcohol vapor increases. The first item is clarification of mechanism of these changes and improvement of long term stability. The second item is research on modification of the metal oxide surface with various kinds of chemical elements to improve sensor characteristics. The third item is development of thick film gas sensors fabricated by a screen printing method. An outline of the research results is given in this review.

The development of new functional materials, especially, solid electrolytes, has been system-atically carried out and new types of sensors have been proposed with advanced concepts. In order to overcome the limitation of the conventional chemical sensors with monovalent ion conductors, multi-valent cation conductors, such as divalent and trivalent cations were firstly developed and the multiva-lent solid electrolytes were combined with oxide anion conductor to fabricate a new advanced type of chemical sensors to such gas species as CO2 , Cl2 , etc. In addition, for the practical CO2 gas sensing application, the water insoluble electrode was also developed to realize an in-situ CO2 monitoring in emitted gas atmosphere. The sensing performances of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides gas sensors
